the Investment and Exchange Re- serve which stands at $107,419 com- pared with $200,550 last year.
There has been an
increase in the loans on Company's policies from $496,991 to $587,038. Mort- gages show an increase, and the total assets of the Company appear, at $2,919,987 compared with $2,781,213 at the end of last year.
It wir be noticed that the un- invested cash stands at only $176.279 as compared with the figure of $247.967 at the end of 1937 as our Funds were more fully, invested:
cal of $1 per share WELS made on the Company's shares on December 1, 1938 payable on or before March 15. 1939. The res- ponse to this may be considered to have been very satisfactory as "practically the whole amount has
been received.
J
A small item of $3,175 is shown in the balance sheet as "calls paid in advance," being amounts paid under the call before December 31. 1938.
RECENT FIRE CLAIM
You may have noticed the recent references in the local press to a fire claim which was contested by the Compsny on rounds of frand.
The claim was in respect of total insurances to the value of $150,000 of which this Company, among six, held the leading share. By agree- ment, the action instituted by the insured" was in the nature of a test action against us as the leading Company, and I am glad to say that the result was entirely in our favour, judgment with costs being awarded to us without our having to call any evidence.
The actual net amount at risk to us, after allowing for reinsur- ance," was small, and any balance of costs which may prove irre- coverable is more than provided for by the reserve included under the heading of Claims;"
VALUED CO-OPERATION In conclusion I should like to place on record our appreciation of the valued co-operation of the Managing Director, Branch" Man- agers, Becretaries and Staff, and I have now pleasure In "proposing the adoption of the Report and Accounts for the year ending December 31, 1938. When that has been seconded, I shall be pleased. to answer any questions which shareholders may wish to ask.
Mr. N. V. A. Croucher seconded the motion, which was carried un- animously.
Proposed by Mr. H. J. M. de Figueiredo, and seconded by Mr. Chan Hau-po, Messrs. R. A. Dastur and Li Tse-fons were re-elected to the Board of Directors.
