The market opened: 178 of a cent lower for all deliveries as compared with Tuesday's closing rates. *-
Very quiet conditions prevalled throughout the day with trading being confined to narrow limits.
The proposed American barter-scheme to exchange Cotton and Wheat for Rubber and Tin exercised a bearish influence, upon the New York market on fears that this plan might induce the LR.R Committee to increase quotas, but there was only a slight reaction noticeable on the London and Singapore Exchanges. It would ap- pear, however, advisable to treat this matter with caution until re- celpt of further dednite information.
After a moderate volume of business having been transacted on basis of quoted rates prices registered a slight advance of 1/8 cent for all deliveries due to some trade and speculative buying.

Market steady but idle.
Rubber stocks held in the United Kingdom showed a decrease of 1.291 tons for the week ending April 11, 1939.
NEW YORK COTTON
The market opened on the easy side, with prices showing sinali declines from yesterday's close. Later, foreign selling and liquidation further depressed values. Subsequently: the market was practically at a stand-still, as traders were awaiting more definite news from Washington in connexion with the barter proposals. Towards the close, however, the market recovered partially, with the undertone fairly steady.
NEW YORK RUBBER
Early in the session, prices staged a minor recovery from the previous day's setback. With factories showing practically no inter- est on the market. prices receded. To-day's 'decline was principally due to liquidation. The steadiness of the London market, however, bolstered sentiment, whilst some trade buying was noted in the final hour.
CHICAGO WHEAT
The market was very quiet throughout the day, with fluctuations 644% practically negligible. There was some small home buying in evi-
