GAS MASK MADE (Tenor)

Doctor's Invention To Stop Infection

The first effective gas mask, according to the bulletin of the Imperial Institute; South Ken- sington, was devised in 1854 by a Dr. Stenhouse.

His idea was initiated when he learned that freshly prepared charcoal has the power of ab- sorbing the noxious odours arls- ing from putrefaction. He in- vented a relatively simple mouth and nose mask containing 11 charcoal Alter, the manufacture of which was entrusted to the Instrument makers to St. Bartho- lomew's Hospital.

The respirator was held in position by an elastic band 'pass ing round the back of the head.

It was designed "to absorb and destroy any miasmata or infectious Darticles present In the air in the case of fever and cholera hospitals, and of districts with ague, yellow fever, and similar diseases!" Dr. Stenhouse also suggested that "persons, living in pestil tercus areas might make their houses as air-tight as possible." and admit alr only through char- coal.fiters. "It is a

pity." the bulletin Comments, "that so much valu- able work should have been over- locked in the period of emergency which arose some 60 odd years later the early part of the Great War.
