Among them were the two letters concerned in the charge, which contained clear threats and 's clear demand for the sum of £150 in cash.

A third letter, addressed to Mise Lockwood at her home, required her to be at Torrington-pluce, Bloomsbury, and to carry a brown parcel containing the money. She would meet a man on a bicycle, to whom she was to give the money, and then drive away in her car.

PARCEL HANDED OVER

After receiving this Miss Lock- wood acted on police instructions, An appointment was kept with police in close attendance, but no one appeared on the first occasion to claim the parcel

Another letter followed, stating that she was to be given unother chance, and adding. "It is either your £150 or your life." This let- ter stated that a slow, lingering. painful death awaited her if any- thing was said about the matter. Miss Lockwood kept that ap- pointment, Div. Det.-Inspr, Gillan and Bergt. Miller being close by. Misa Lockwood was approached by Ward on a bicycle.

She said, "You want the parcel?" and handed him one which had been specially made up. In taking it, Mr. Gattle continued, Ward said: "I don't like doing this at all; it has got nothing to do with me." Then he rode away, but was stopped by the officers.
