IS RUMOURED THAT JAPANESE PLANES DROPPED PAMPHLETS GIVING THE KWANGTUNG AUTHORITIES TWENTY-FOUR HOURS IN WHICH TO SURRENDER OTHERWISE LARGE - SCALE BOMBING OF THE CITY WILL BE CARRIED OUT.
IT IS REPORTED THAT THE "ULTIMATUM EXPIRES AT DAWN TO-MORROW (SATURDAY).
TREMENDOUS excitement was noticeable throughout the city as a result of the Government evacuation order. all roads leading away from Canton being crammed with evacuees carrying children. food and meagre household belongings. These refugees gathered at the wharves in the early morning waiting for boats, tow boats and ferries to take them upriver.
To-night's boats are filled beyond capacity and since dawn, towards mid-day. the crowds in the streets; thinned out 05 the populace gradually evacuated and the city had a Sunday appearance.

Japanese planes twice ap peared over Swatow this morn- ing and bombed the Swatow- Chaoan railway.
From early morning to two a'clock this afternoon, there were no less than four air- raid alarms. Apart from ex- tensive reconnaissance, the Japanese planes dropped numerous preposterous hand- bills which were ignored by the people.
Tenghal, Chaoan, Fungshun and other important towns in east Kwangtung were visited by a lone Japanese plane in the morning. which few low and strafed the places. Quantities of handbills Werc also dropped during the flight.
