A Japanese attempt to regain, Chungenchen strategic town southeast of Kaifeng, which was to- captured by the Chiness on Bept. 3 was folled by stout Chinese resistance yesterday.
Japanese troops from Kaifeng launched a counter- attack on the city. In a herce engagement in the western outskirts they were defeated and driven back to Kaifeng, leaving 70 dead and 43 wounded on the battlefield.
