Government Project Finds Support Of People

Chungking, August 30.. -.. While it may take some time to realise what is being planned for the relief of the refugees in China, particularly in the south-west. the general policy of the National Government in this respect is being gradually known and appreciated by the Chinese public, the leaders of which are to rally to its support.
The immediate problem is housing and a coinmittee has been organised In Chungking, the wartime capital of the Republic of China on the upper Yangtse, to erect 250 tenement houses in suitable and well-protected places in the neighbourhood, available to the fairly well-to-do as well as the somewhat financially strained and the needy. Bocal leaders and business men have raised $700,000 and the central authorities. $300,000, for the purpose.

The central authorities have ad- vised all those finding it necessary to leave. their homes down the River to first concentrate at either Changsha, Hengyang, Wuchang, Hankow, Shast, Ichang, or Ita; and some of them, when necessary, will be assisted by the Goverment with transportation facilities to go westward.

Chungking organisations backing the *Government in its anti- aggressióni war will have an iIL- formation once at Ichang to ad- vise those heading for Szechnen and upon their arrival, they will be accorded temporary hospitality either in Chungking or Hochwan, for 1,000 to 5,000 is already under in each of which places a camp preparation.
The Szechuen Provincial Govern- ment had $200,000 in its last semi- annual budget for 1938 to be de- (voted to war charity and so far it has only applied a small part of this sum for the provision of an. orphinage for walls coming from the lower Yangtse to Chengtü.
