WOUNDED SOLDIERS CARED FOR: SPECIAL COMMITTEES

Changsha Populace. Firm In Belief China Will Win War
(From Our Special Correspondent In Changsha)
As the result of the recent Japanese alt raids, the people of Hunan, bave Dow become fully war conscious and are preparing in earnest to resist the invaders.
"
At first the average Hunanese took little or no Interest in the war as he thought of it as just another civil war, a matter for only the politicians to worry about.
་་
However, the arrival of refugees in thousands at the end of last year and the stories they told of Japanese atrocities made the pep- ple of Hunan realise that this was a war of resistance against Ja- panese aggression.
The first air raid Changsha, the capital of Hunan, had ever ex- perienced was on November 24 last

The air raid in the spring of
this year, when the Hunan Univer- sity across the river was bomber and wrecked, helped to change the people's attitude to air raids. Since then dugouts have been made and Red Cross units reorganised. The Y.M.C.A. has been particularly active.
Three weeks ago several tombs were dropped in the most densely populated district of Changsha, resulting in the death of over 400 civilians. People in the city began to evacuate and over 100,000 left in less than a week. With the per- suasion of the police, this has been stopped and normal conditions now prevall
The problem of disabled soldiers has been solved by the appoint- ment of a committee, representing patriotic o.ganisations, to attend to their needs.
The soldiers are met on their arrival in Changsha and those who are seriously wounded are sens to the hospitals. The re-. mainder are sent to the outly- „ ing districts and provided with small sums of money to cover sundry expenses.
7)
People in Changsha are firm.. in their belief that China will win the war. Their belief is based partly on oracles and partly on queer phenomenal changes, not to mention their confidence in the Chiang Kai- shek regime.
A whisper started at the begin- ning of this year that if the moon.
