OF CO-OPERATION BETWEEN MERCANTILE MARINE AND NAVY

The downpour of rain on Saturday morning held off and the sun. was attempting to pierce through the clouds when the Indo-China Steam Navigation Company's new single-screw passenger and cargo steamer, Tai Sang, was launched at the Kowloon Dockyard of the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock Company Limited, the, naming cere- mony being gracefully performed by Mrs. Dicken, wife of Commodore. E. B. C. Dicken, O.B.E., D.S.C., R.N., who also attended.

-Over two hundred were present to witness the christening of the new vessel, among those present being His Excellency the Governor, Sir Geoffry Northcote, K.C.MLG., accompanied by Lady Northeate, and Mrs. Bartholomew, wife of His Excellency the General Officer Com- manding. Major-General A. W. Bartholomew, who was unable to at- tend through indisposition.

Speaking at the reception held subsequent to the ceremony, the Hon. Mr. Stanley H. Dodwell, Chairman of the Board of Directors. remarked that it had always been a source of amazement to his non. technical mind how much of the varied and intricate work connect- ed with the building of a ship could be entrusted to Chinese labour under skilled European supervision. He added that very few yards at Home-only the very largest-made their own engines and bollers, and none to his certain knowledge ever cast their own stern frames.
