Silkylight Wins Race In A Canter
A dividend of $5,962 for the Daily Double in which only one punter spotted the winner of the econd leg-four winning mounts for Mr. B. A. Proulx and a dividend of $268.20 by Sea Dragon (Mg. 1). Black) in the seventh rare of the day-those were the features of the First Extra Race Meeting which was held at the Race Course on Saturday in very chilly weather.
Dividends on the whole were better than at the Annual Meeting and most of the races provided very close finishes, this speaking volumes for the very efficient way in which the starter went about his
work.
Silky light, winner of the Derby and Champions at the Annual Meeting, accepted in the itong Kong Handicap and showed that it was in a class by itself by winning easily from Red Feather and Cossack's Geanty. In the penultimate race of the day King's Lead which placed second, was disqualified for start- ing without sufficient weight. This race, incidentally, was won by Commencement Bay (Mr. D. Wooller Kicks Goal From 35 Yards Outnette 16.52.18
The Irish forwards held their
serum and own
McKibben showed good defensive work when the Welsh backs, with behind themi tried the sun kicking ahead. Exchanges, at... this stage were very even and after 20 minutes Wooller scored
a penalty goal from 35 yards following an obstruction by Cromey.
Ireland were playing better two previous than in the matches but Wooller had bad luck when he failed by a mat- ter of inches only to. score an-
other penalty goal from half- way, near the touchline.
After the interval it was seen that Cromey did not re- turn to the feld, Little was seen of the Welsh combination in the first half but the backs handled well and on the re- sumption Wales were definite- ly on the ascendancy in the early stages but only the 'stout defence of Craig and Correns prevented any scoring."
During a fierce attack on the Irish line, Harry Rees tried to drop a goal but the ball struck
the past and Taylor took pos- session to go over in the far. corner. Wooller took the kick from a difficult angle but fall- ed to add goal points.
Wales continued to hold the advantage but their handling generally was poor. Wales re- peatedly got the ball from the Ecrum and harassed the Irish defence which broke down. Clement then scored a try which Legge converted beauti- '- fully from the touchline and after this It was all- Wales”—- (Reuter).
