The 28th annual general meet- ing of Malayan Tin Dredging Ltd. was held recently in London.
Mr. C. V. Stephens, the chairman, said that under the International Tin Restriction Agreement the permissible output for the year to June 30 last had averaged 73 per cent. of assessed production, an increase of 14 per cent over the previous year's average. The quan- tity of ground dredged during the year. 10,144.300 cubic yards, was over 3,000,000 cubic yards more than in the year before, while the average recovery of concentrates was practically the same, namely, 4 kati per cubic yard, and 2.425 tons of tin ore were produced. The duty paid to the FMS. Govern- ment had amounted to £48,389. In- the proft and loss account, there| was a new item, National Defence Contribution, £2.508, which was the company's estimated ability on account of the new tax for the three months ended June last,
The profit for the year, £240,585, added to the balance of proft and loss brought “forward from the previous year, gave a total credit of £314,505. After deducting the interims dividends of 67 per cent.. and the amount written on the the avaliable property account. was £123.860. The directors recom- mended payment of a final dl- vidend of 25 per cent., making 921 per cent. for the year, and learnig £75,880 to be carried forward. The total dividend for the 'year of 921 per cent. compared with 80 per cent, for the previous year and 45 per cent. for the year before. The company had been in operation for 26 years and the proft was the highest it had yet achieved.

A NEW AREA
of desirability acquiring further areas to provide additional fe for their undertaking had been receiving the close attention, of the directors and the general manager tor some considerable time, but progress in that direction had hitherto been restricted 23 the F.M.B. Government for some years past had been keeping their books closed against applications for new areas. However, the books had re- cently been reopened and applica- tions for prospecting licences were now being entertained. The com- pany had entered into an agrée- ment whereby they acquired on satisfactory terms the right to prospect an area of some 8,000 acres for a period of one year with the further right to select up to 3.000 acres. The land was reputed .to average fully 100ft in depth. and with deep land a payable area of 1.000 acres only would mean a very valuable addition to their property.
The control scheme was due to run until the end of 1941. and It was to operate in a harmonious. manner it was obvious that means would have to be evolved whereby

It was, therefore, pleasing to know that at the International Tin Committee meeting held on Friday last a gesture was made to redress the present unsatisfactory position where three of the par- ticipating countries agreed to sur- render a total of some 11,500 tons from their 1937 carry-over and standard tonnage for 1938, such tonnage to be divided between Malaya, Nigeria and the Dutch East Indies in due proportion to their standard tonnages. The effect of that adjustment on the 40 per cent. cut in the international quota would lower the domestic quota of Malaya from 80 per cent. to 58 per cent. of capacity for the quarter commencing Jan. 1 next.
