GEDGE MÉDAL AND PRIZE Paymaster Sub-Lieutenant W. C. F. Grant-Dalton, or H.M.S. Arethusa, has been awarded the Gedge Medal and Pride for 1937. This commemorate the late Staff- Paymaster Joseph T. Gedge. R N.. who was killed when the Amphion was sunk by a mine on August 6, 1914, and who was the first British officer of all the fighting services to be killed during the War. It is awarded annually to the officer obtaining the highest precentage of marks in the examinations for paymaster sub-lieuteant.

PROMOTION TO COMMANDER

For the New Year promotions to commander, the zone of selection included Heutenant-commanders of from three to eight years' seniority, compared with three to 7 years in June last and three to seven years in December, 1936. Five of the 23 new commanders had served for over seven years but less than eight years as leu- tenant-commander, and are 36 or 37 years of age, only two "years older than most of the other officers below them in the zone. The senior of the new comman- ders stood 291 places down the list of Beutenant-commanders, and the junior 658 places down. A year ago the senior was 321 places down and the junior 628, so that the selections Zave covered a larger number of officers in both directions. The list includes one officer, Commander W... P. Mc- Carthy, who gained his commis- slon from the lower deck as mate in 1923, and is now promoted after commanding the river gunboat Seames in the West River, Chiná.
