There fol- lowed a few passages between the two solicitors, Mr. Hugh-Jones re- marking that It was Mr. "Silva's function to see that an interpreter was at hand if he wanted to call his witness. Mr. Silva retorted it was not and that at the previous hearing His Worship's chief clerk had arranged for the interpreter to be present.

Mr. Nakashima eventually went into the witness-box to testify in Chinese and repeated the oath after the interpreter. Mr. Hugh- Jones questioned whether witness understood what he was repeating and having put the question to Mr. Nakashima, the interpreter said: "He doesn't know what the truth is." (laughter in Court).

Mr. Silva: I hardly think that is quite an accurate translation.

His Worship decided to adjourn the case for the services of a Jap- anese interpreter.
