PEACE AND
PACIFICATION
Germany's Demand For Future
Paris. Dec. 25.
The purpose of his journey to Germany and his impressions there are explained by the former French Premier. M. Fandin, in the "Paris Soir."
The purpose of the journey was, he declared, to become acquainted | with the German point of view. Germany demanded return of her African Colonies Lord Halifax had received precise explanations of the German point of view and the French Government had been informed about it in London
The decision never to return to the League, announced by Ger- many's leading men. had to be considered as definite.
Regarding the general organisa- tion of peace in Europe Germany was suggesting that a Franco- German Entente would be a much better instrument of peace and pacification than a resuscitation of the League. Covenant, which had been a disappointing failure as far as practical application was con- cerned.
Germany was pointing out that French conception of the status quo was opposed by dynamic con- ception of historical development Germany demanded that her vital interests would not be blocked by France. A Franco-German agree ment would evidently be only a
pact of mutual confidence which could be guaranteed by agreement
on armaments.
Whatever might be the outcome of the experiment, whether recon- ciliation of the various "axes" of
feverishly arming Europe be pos- sible or not. It should be borne in mind that quick action must be taken. M. Flandin concluded.-- . Transocean News Service.

Innovation
Reconstruction of the North West
Quadrant of the British Museum, where books are shelved, has just been completed. This is the first step of a programme of reconstruc- tion and rearrangement.
In place of the old "Iron Library," dating from 1854-57, there is a new steel library with fire-resisting walls and floors. It contains six instead of three floors, and will hold six times as many books as before.

AND HIS RECORDS
Court Order Refused
Mr. Justice Crossman, in the Chancery Division, refused a ap- plication made on behalf of Mr. Jack Hylton, the dance-band lea- der, in the action brought by him against the Gramophone Company Ltd. The case concerned royalties on records of performances made by his band under two agreements with the company, dated in 1927
and 1931.
Mr. Hylton asked that the com- pany should be ordered to file an Each of the other quadrants will affidavit fully stating what docu- be similarly reconstructed. Workments were in their possession will begin on the North-Eastern relating to royalties due on records Quadrant early in the New Year.
An innovation is an air con- ditioning plant, which keeps the atmosphere in the new stacks at a temperature that does not vary more than two degrees. This is primarily to preserve the books. but eventually it will be extended to the Reading Room,
NEW BOOK CONVEYORS Even more important from the readers' point of view is the new system of book conveyors, designed to make the fetching and delivery of books easter and quicker.
The plant for carrying books
consists of two elevators, each serving six floors and connected in the sub-basement by a two-way belt conveyor. On this travel stand-
ard wooden boxes containing the books.
The new apparatus, which is called the "Paternoster" system. because it counts boxes as pater- rosters are told, on a rosary, was borrowed from Germany. Two off- cials of the Reading Room paid a visit to the Prussian State Library, and adapted the type of conveyor in use there to the needs of the British Museum,

The oficials of the Reading Room receive an average of 2,000 applications for books a day, and handle an average of 3,400 volumes.
The reconstruction of the North- West Quadrant has taken three years. It is hoped that when the other three quadrants are com- pleted, in eight or 10 years, it will take a minimum of 15 minutes to obtain books from the farthest part of the building.
