SHARK AND BABY HOOKED IN SINGAPORE

Although the crew of the P. and O liner "Ranchi," which was in Penang harbour recently. were over 400 miles from Singapore, they still could not get over the excitement they were given "over the capture of u 350-lb. mother shark and her baby.

A steward stated that the mon- ster was fished through accident,

"We were all excited over the Incident. It appears that a big hook was lowered into the sen by

steward while the liner

was berthea alongside the pier in Slugapore.

3

Just before we left for Penang the previous morning the steward felt & tug and received a shock when he found that a seven-foot shark was dangling on the hook. The monster was hauled up by means of a rope, 20 members of the crew helping in the capture. We cut off the bead and then found a baby in the stomach. We threw thu mother' body and the small creature back into the sea. I have here two small teeth, from the shark which I am keeping ALS a souvenir.".

In their excitement they forgot the fact that a shark's body could be put to many good uses, and they missed some delicious dishes.

some members, owing to the-ract that the H. M. S. Medway was due to sail for Singapore on a normal cruise in January. They were ex- pected back, however, in March and, he hoped, in time for the Services and Bisley prize meetings.

Major Steers, replying, said that he was exceedingly glad to see that the 4th Submarine Flotilla. Ride Club had such a strong and active list of members. He recalled the splendid work of the late Lieut. (E A. C. Berlyn RN, in fostering enthusiasm and interest when the Club was first started, and sala that the fact that its membership had grown from 18 at the end of 1935 to its present number showed what could be done if one was keen and was prepared to work. He concluded by wishing the Club continued success.

BULLION CIRCLES

SURPRISED

New Industrial "Base Price For Silver

London, Dec. 23. Considerable surprise is express- ed in bullon circles here at Bom- bay's reception of Handy and 'Harman's new industrial base price for silver. It is pointed out that Handy and Harman probably fixed the price on London parity adding shipping charges in New York et |cetera in order to place them in a competitive position on the London market in dealing with the. United States arts and industry. London considers it absurd to talk of any reduction in the American price which remains unchanged at 45 cents at which business was actu- ally done with the United States Treasury yesterday. As a leading broker, interviewed by Reuter said, "The only the price which counts is the United States Treasury price of 45 cents for foreign silver in American bars, Handy and Har man's industrial base price does not affect the situation except sentimentally." Opinion is general that Handy and Harman will con- tinue axing the base price on Lon- don parity possibly at 1/16 and

over.

U.S. POLICY IN

FAR EAST

The Neutrality

Was

Act

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives re- cently decided to report unfavour- ably on a resolution which would require President Roosevelt to answer nine questions dealing with the position of the American Gov- ernment in relation to the Sino- Japanese hostilities. The resolu tion was introduced in the House by Mr. Francis Cose, and a letter from the Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull.. Was accepted as conveying authoritatively all the Information required. „Mr. Case's principal question whether the State Department "is using the Neutrality Act as an instru- | ment of policy," and it apparently drew its Inspiration from a state- ment made in the House by Mr. Sam McReynolds, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He had said that he thought Japan! and the Fascist countries would be more alded by the putting into effect of the Act than otherwise. and was quoted as adding: “I am not saying we should ald China, but I want to stick a dagger into those countries that are trying to create dictatorships and trying to ruin the world."

To Mr. Case's question Mr. Hull's reply was that the State Depart- ment's policy was entirely depen- dent on the President's decision whether or not a state of WAT existed between China and Japan, though neither had declared war. To other questions his answers were that American officials in China from the beginning of hostilities had urged and helped American citizens to withdraw: that the Department

not Issuing passports for China gener- ally that arms shipments to both countries were on a cash basis; and that the United States had no

the Japanese Empire, but did maintain them in Peking. Tientsin, and Shanghai to protect her

was

It was announced that licences for arms worth $5,740,000 (1.148,000) had been granted in. November, of which a little over $1,000,000 worth are for China, Soviet worth for Over $800,000 Russia, and over $500,000 worth for Japan.
