THREAT OF HOSTILITIES IN
SOUTH CHINA
Large Japanese Force Believed On
Way Down For Operations
YANGTSE DRIVE BREATHER
Shanghai, Dec. 15. The majority of observers are of the opinion that the next scene of the war will be South China, where a large-scale Japanese drive is ex- pected to be launched in an effort
to cut China's last remaining route to the sea.
This bellef, it is pointed out, is strengthened by recent activities of Japanese naval craft and war planes in South China which point ominously to the fact that a de- termined drive is imminent as soon as the hands of the Japanese army and navy are freed with the com- pletion of the occupation of Nan- king.
HANGCHOW FBONT
It is believed the resumption at the campaign will involve either a drive to Hankow or prolonged hostilities in South China. If the Japanese choose to attack Hankow, it is stated that probably they will do so both from the north and along the Yangtse.
The next large-scale campaign is expected by some to be in Kiangsu, Cheklang and Anhwel and wil likely be directed towards Hang- chow, which is the last remaining important city in the northern area under Chinese control.
That the Japanese are preparing for a drive towards this lakeside Unconfirmed reports are current city is given weight by the fact here to-day that 50,000 Japanese that the Army's labour corps is re- troops are being removed from ported to be busily repairing Central China and

According to the "Daily Tele Fraph," diplomatic consideration is being given in London to the de- sirability of reinforcing British naval strength in Far Eastern wa- tera, bat it is not certain, however, that ships will be despatched at this stage.
Naval reinforcements up to the heaviest types of craft are avail- able, but decision to despatch them will only be taken after the most careful consideration of all ele- ments in the situation- Router.
