MALAYA'S UNIVERSITY-WHEN?
RAFFLES GRADUATES' REUNION
Raffles College, Singapore, is to have a full-time principal from next year, and from 1941. Queen's Scholarships will be awarded at elther Rames College or the Medi- cal College.
This was announced by the Governor, Sir Shenton Thomas, when he spoke, at the annual re- union dinner of Raffles College graduates recently.
The Governor also stated that the Government of the Federated Malay States had decided that in future selected candidates for the Malay administrative service would. be sent to Raffles College for a three years course in order that they might be better equipped for
service as administrative officers.
He remarked that looking back on the years, it was good to know what splendid work the college had done, and added that he approved of a board which the college had established to obtain posts for graduates.
Mr. Oon Khye Klang (president of the College Union) sald that the recent announcement of the reduction of school fees bore testi mony to the Governor's interest in education.
The announcement that a com- mission was to be appointed to investigate the administration of the college was a step, he thought, towards the establishment of a local university.

BANNED PLAY'S SUCCESS Heavy Box-Office Takings Of "Victoria Regina'
At 70 Mr. Laurence Housman,; author of "Victoria Regina." has not only scored a great personal success, but established new re- cords for theatre finance.
For 35 years "Victoria Regina" was under the censor's ban in
England because of a ruling that no British monarch could be por- trayed on the stage during his or her lifetime or the lifetime of any children.
The ban was lifted in June, almost exactly 100 years after the accession of Queen Victoria,
During the play's 19 weeks' 'run at the Lyric Theatre, the weekly takings have never dropped below £2.000, and the average is about €2,300,

It might not be in this generation, but a day would come when Singapore would offer facili- ties to research workers from overseas..
Graduates were an outward ex- pression of college training. Most of them were absorbed in the education service and had proved to be of great assistance. Some
were in the Straits Settlements
Civil Service and the Johore Civil Service, and one had been admit ted in the newly-established Municipal Intermediate Service.
Graduates had proved capable and had achieved varying to be success in their respective spheres. There was still scope for employ- ment of graduates in other direc- tions.
It might not be apparent now, but the training which was given in the three years was sufficient to equip one for executive and administrative duties in commerce. The action of the Municipality In throwing open posts normally. occupied by university men to graduates was an indication that such was a fact. The Introduction of economics had fulfilled a long- felt want and the graduates had the advantage of being in contact with local conditions.
GUNS AND PEACE
China's Two Alternatives
Courage is not enough which to win pitched battles under with
modern conditions. The Chinese soldiers are courageous to the ex- treme, but they are handicapped by lark of modern equipment..
The Japanese have found that the Chinese are their superiors in
hand-to-hand combat and, there- fore, they are now careful not to launch an assault before they are sure
that the Chinese defences have been put out of action by gun-tire, and that the Chinese de- fenders have been decimated by high explosives.

The American triumph has been vellously well, but it lacks numbers. even more remarkable.
The play opened in New York two years ago. With Miss Helen Hayes in the title role. After a slightly dragging start, the weekly takings soon averaged £4.000.
Perhaps the most striking feature of the play's triumphal progress in the United States was its provincial tour. In the first week at Hartford, Connecticut. the house was sold out within two hours of the box office opening, and the two days' performances brought
in more
than £2,600. Four nights realised more than £5,000. Similar returns came out of the Boston and Phila- delphia visita.
INQUEST ON LATE
MR. V. D. KNOWLES Dead Before He Fell Into Bath
Mr. V. D. Knowles, the well-known Singapore criminal lawyer, was dead before he dropped into the bath of water in which he was found in his Katong dat early on the morning of November 8. He died from arterio-sclerosis and heart failure.
This was revealed at the inquest which was opened by the Singapore coroner. Mr. W.G. Porter, and which ended when Dr. H. O. Hopkins, acting Government Pa- thologist, gave his opinion that. death was due to natural causes,
A special European Jury agreed with the coroner that there was NO necessity to call further evidence.
EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY Returning a verdict of death from natural causes, the coroner expressed his sympathy with the relatives of Mr. Knowles. Mr. G. T. Howe, the public prosecutor, who appeared for the Crown, replied: "I wish to join with you in your expression of sympathy, air. It is given to very few of us to be held in such universal esteem and affection as was Mr. Knowles."
The jury comprised Messrs., C. H. Bone, W. H. Findlay, R. E Gray and G.. Martin who was the foreman.
A battery of three 12-pounder guns does duty in a position which calls for a battery of six guns of at least 3-inch calibre. This means that the Chinese artillery is out- ranged and has to get closer to its enemies. Getting claser involves placing the Chinese guns within a range which, though extreme for themselves, is all but point-blank for the heavier weapons opposition.

OUTSIDE HELP WANTED China hopes that other nations will let her have more guns with which to defend Eers, but she points out that these guns are only required as a temporary measure,. and that she does not wish to arm as other countries.do. She knows that her place is on the side of peace. She lacks guns now ke- cause she did not deaire war and, moreover, did not prepare for it. The present hostilitles were forced upon her and, in the beginning the situation looked as though mighty Japan was chastising weak China, but the nations are now realising that China is by no means weak.
ONE OF TWO THINGS China must do one of two things it she is to remain whole. She must arm herself, make herself into a Aghting machine and drive. the Japanese from her shores or, she must persuade the world to act collectively on her behalf and to help her to get rid of Japan's leech-like attentions.
