RAFFLES GRADUATES' REUNION
Raffles College, Singapore, is to have a full-time principal from next year, and from 1941. Queen's Scholarships will be awarded at elther Rames College or the Medi- cal College.
This was announced by the Governor, Sir Shenton Thomas, when he spoke, at the annual re- union dinner of Raffles College graduates recently.
The Governor also stated that the Government of the Federated Malay States had decided that in future selected candidates for the Malay administrative service would. be sent to Raffles College for a three years course in order that they might be better equipped for
service as administrative officers.
He remarked that looking back on the years, it was good to know what splendid work the college had done, and added that he approved of a board which the college had established to obtain posts for graduates.
Mr. Oon Khye Klang (president of the College Union) sald that the recent announcement of the reduction of school fees bore testi mony to the Governor's interest in education.
The announcement that a com- mission was to be appointed to investigate the administration of the college was a step, he thought, towards the establishment of a local university.

It might not be apparent now, but the training which was given in the three years was sufficient to equip one for executive and administrative duties in commerce. The action of the Municipality In throwing open posts normally. occupied by university men to graduates was an indication that such was a fact. MR. V. D. KNOWLES Dead Before He Fell Into Bath
Mr. V. D. Knowles, the well-known Singapore criminal lawyer, was dead before he dropped into the bath of water in which he was found in his Katong dat early on the morning of November 8. He died from arterio-sclerosis and heart failure.
This was revealed at the inquest which was opened by the Singapore coroner. Mr. W.G. Porter, and which ended when Dr. H. O. Hopkins, acting Government Pa- thologist, gave his opinion that. death was due to natural causes,
A special European Jury agreed with the coroner that there was NO necessity to call further evidence.
EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY Returning a verdict of death from natural causes, the coroner expressed his sympathy with the relatives of Mr. Knowles. Mr. G. T. Howe, the public prosecutor, who appeared for the Crown, replied: "I wish to join with you in your expression of sympathy, air. It is given to very few of us to be held in such universal esteem and affection as was Mr. Knowles."
The jury comprised Messrs., C. H. Bone, W. H. Findlay, R. E Gray and G.. Martin who was the foreman.

ICE HOCKEY "STAR" INJURED
Bert Peer, popular Harringay Racers' forward. has broken bath elbows as a result of his crash into the barrier during the ice- hockey match between the Racers and Earl's Court Rangers recently.
He was taken to hospital, where an X-ray examination revealed the full extent of the damage to his &TINA.
Peer will be out of hockey for two or three months-a big blow to the Racers, who are running Wembley Lions close in the London Cup tournament.
