The Evolution of the Tank, A Record of Royal Naval Air Service

By Caterpillar Experiments.” Rear-Adul 'Sir' 'Murray · Sueter. (Hutchinson and Co. 12s. 6d.).

This book is divided into two parts, and it is the sub-title that most accurately describes the for- mër. Here Adml. Sueter relates the part played by the Royal Naval Air Service in the carler develop- ments of the mechanical fighting vehicle which, from the genesis' of the Holt caterpillar tractor already In the Army prior to 1914, Anally emerged as the Tank. In addition he includes chapters on the per- formances of the new weapon in the Great War, with French and German opinions on them, and on the type of tanks in the use of armies to-day. The second section discusses the question as to whom credit for the Invention should go.. and makes some conjectures as to tanks of the future. There are also some rather rambling re- miniscences and observations on national policy in general.

CHARGE

European In The Dock

Charged with having driven a motor-car in a negligent manner on or about May 30 at the junction of Orchard Road, Tank Road and Clemenceau Avenue, and thereby causing the death of an elderly

Chinese, Meng Ah Quan. Mr. C. A. Rass, a European, stood his, trial at the Assize Court. Bingapore, before Mr. Justice Horne, and a Special Jury.

The prosecution alleged that the accused was driving the motor-car No. P-2750 along Orchard Road and came up to the police traic control box at the junction of Orchard Road, Tank Road and Clemenceau Avenue. At that con- trol box, he was alleged to have turned to his right without waiting for a safe opportunity for doing so, and a collision occurred as the

Police report describes the case as suspected suicide. Further in-result. quiries are, however, being made.

while in certain detall the author repeats himself frequently. But he has a good deal of interest to say, and the bibliography of works consulted evinces his study of his subject.

"HIGH AUTHORITY" Adml. Sueter tells how during the war he incurred the wrath of the Board of Admiralty for writing

to

"High Authority" to obtain public recognition of what he and his air officers had done in con- nection with the tanks. That was in November, 1917, and in cou- sequence in the following January he was dismissed from his rom- mand in Southern Italy. He writes without bitterness, but he shows himself-and not without reason- censorious of the ultra-conservat- ism of the Sea Lords and Admiral- ty generally, and even now he does not consider that his little band of ploneers have yet received "a "square deal," for they got no grant from the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors and had to take consolation in commendation by the Army Counell as late April, 1935.

Still, even admitting that pre- cedents exist to be broken, it may be doubted whether the Admiralty

Plight Of Maryknoll Sisters"

The motor-car concerned did not

stop after the accident. It was seen

by a number of witnesses to have been driven by a European.

The witnesses for the prosecu- tion would also say that the car had on its front number plate the letter "P" and the figure "2" im- mediately after it. On the rear number plate, the witnesses would say that there was the letter "P" with a four-digit number below it, the Arst Agure from the left being *2"

Outlining the case for the pro- secution, Mr. Paul Storr, Crown Counsel, said that on May 30 at about 4.30 p.m. police constable No.1283 was on duty on the traffic control box at the junction of Tank Road, Orchard Road and Cle menceau Avenue.

A motor-car alléged to have been driven by the accted was seep

No more has yet been heard in the Colony coricerning the plight of two Maryknoll Sisters, Aister Monica Boyle of Minersville, Pennsylvania, and Sister Maria Basto of Hong Kong, who were on Sancian Island, when, according to | coming information received here, it was occupied by the Japanese.

Although his plans are not set- tled yet the Rev. Fr. R. J. Cairns of the Maryknoll Mission may leave here for Sandian Island to-

from the direction of Stamford Road towards Orchard Road, and to have turned right into Clemenceau Avenue. Then a collision occurred. in which an elderly Chinese cyclist was knocked down. The cyclist succumbed to his injuries a few days after admission to hospital.
