COMPANY
MEETING
Raphael Tuck & Sons
Reputation For Artistic
Productions
The 30th annual general meeting of Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., was held recently in London, Sir Edgar L. Waterlow, Bt., MA. (the chair- man presiding.
seated
Mr. Desmond A. Tuck Joint managing director) said that this was an historie. occasion in the annals of the company. The chair was being taken for the first time by Sir Edgar Waterlow, Bt.. and at the board table were thel: other two new colleagues-Mr. V. E Goodman and Mr. A. E. Owen-Jones. In contrast they had to record the retirement from the company of their co-director, Mr. Gustave Tuck, after having spent no less than 87 years of activity in the business-almost from its in- ception.
With regard to the, past year's trading, he wished at the outset to say that, whatever they had suc- cecded in doing that year, or falled to do, one thing was certain-that they had succeeded in maintaining the prestige and foremost position they had so long enjoyed as the leading fine art publishers.
On Christmas Eve last they ex- perienced a severe shock by a serious outbreak of are at their works in Banner-street, containing plant and goods which had just been manufactured or were in course of manufacture,
Whilst,
fortunately, their actual Christmas trade was over, the aftermath of a fre such as this had not been without Its adverse effects.
Turning to some of the individual departments, shareholders would be
gratified to learn that the Chris- tmas and greeting card department had fully maintained its turnover of the previous year, which was considerably greater than it was in
those more palmy days when a full dividend was being paid on the company's shares.
ROYAL CHRISTMAS CARDS
He was proud to say that the company had been privileged to produce in this, the first year of the reign of King George VI, the Christmas cards for their Majesties the King and Queen, her Majesty Queen Mary, and other members of the Royal family. This was now the fith consecutive reign in which their firm had enjoyed the privilege of supplying the Royal Christmas cards
The calendar department's pro- ductions continued to lead the feld in regard to style and creative art. It was true, that they had not escaped the attention of those who had conferred upon them the sin- cerest of flattery, but the enormous
number of new houses which were springing up all over the country gave them ample scope, and op- portunity for a considerable cx- pansion of output in this field of activities.
Customs Loan Service As
Bargaining Weapon
London, Dec. 4.
The "Financial News," in a lengthy review of the prospects of Far Eastern securities.- states the opinion that Japan will possibly use the Customs foreign loan ser- vice as a bargaining weapon with the Powers to gain acquiescence in her demands on China.
1:
Regarding fears of' default of loans, the "Financial Japanese News" says the possibility does not exist
Japan would never be able to finance large-scale development of her mainland conquests if she des- troyed her financial credit in the West-
foreign debt is held by Japanese nationals and it is safe to say that they also have a healthy slice of the Customs loans
The "Manchester Guardian,” re- viewing the Chinese Customs re- turns, emphasises, the remarkable expansion of Chinese exports since the beginning of the war.
The journal stresses the remark- able drop in Germany's China trade. Both in imports and ex- ports the drops are far heavier than Britain's and America's.
"In spite of heavy losses us a re- sult of the war, China's trade in the first nine months of 1937 has maintained a remarkable degree." further reducing, the adverse trade It is also to be remembered balance by nearly $42.000,000.- thât more than half the Japanese | Reuter.
SILVER AGREEMENT RENEWAL
London, Dec. 4 Renewal of the International Silver Agreement of 1933, expiring at the end of 1937, will not be at- tempted, and it will be allowed to lapse without further ado, says
The Statist
The paper continues that the question of immediate Import is whether the precarious equilibrium surrounding the market will be up- set by lapsing of the agreement.
This depends on the attitude of the American authorities. and their readiness to take additional supplies at prices now ruling.
This will only be decided by the few in- personal reactions of a dividuals in the United States
NO EARLY DISPOSAL It may be assumed that lapaing of the agreement will be imme- diately reflected in larger offerings of the white metal on the market.
ו יו
doubt that in the event of real. pressure on China's exchange re- serves, which may come soon, the Chinese authorities will be compel- led to begin liquidation of this asset, especially as they will be ng longer boung by the restrictive clauses of the agreement.
PRESSING NEEDS Moreover, it is by no means cer- tain that the Sino-American Sil- ver Treaty will survive lapsing of the international agreement.
While the situation may be com- plicated by sales by Japan of silver confiscated from areas in China

"The Statist" concludes by say- ing that it looks therefore as though the market had a fairly critical period ahead, and from the market point of view, imminent
