Or, The de facto government is God-given and God-authorised. If you dis- obey it or one of its servants you disobey God. And who is the ex- ample whose name will be in all his hearer's minds at once? Who is God's agent, a terror to evil men but not to good, "a minister of God to thee for God"? Nero, Notorious, profligate, cruel, Nero.
GOOD CITIZENSHIP
Many have tried to explain-that- away. Paul, they say, believed the end of the world imminent and is doing no more than tell them to obey their officers in a sinking ship, Others think he spoke with such studled vagueness that he was not committing himself to loyalty to any particular ruler but simply advocating good citizenship part of a Christian's obligation. I renders believe Paul knew his would think at once of Nero. 1
