ZOO SOCIETY SPLIT

Over Popular Attractions

Construction of a new Elephant House at the London Zoo. costing between £20,000 and £25,000, is to be begun this winter. This decision will increase the opposi- tion of many Fellows of the present policy of "popularisation." . At the last annual meeting of the society la April, it will be re- called, the Zoo was described as becoming a "glorified fun fair" instead of a sclentifte institution. and a motion to reject the annual report was defeated only by the casting vote of the Chairman.

In spite of the objections then raised, however, the same polley has been continued throughout this summer, and it is claimed that "Pets' Corner" has never been more popular, while the "inte nights," which ended recently, have also been well attended.

Lieutenant-Colonel W. P. C.

There are one or two things, however, that I feel I must say..and I am confident that you too would like me to say thera before we part to-day.

I want first of all to congratulate all those who have won scholar- sups or prizes to-day. I still re- member what a thrill it was to me to realise that I had won a school prize, and I congratulate each of them very warmly.. I want you all to remember, however, that

worth having unless it prize is takes real effort to win it, and that

is where every one of you plays his part. We can't all be prize winners. but we can all work hard and do our best, and in a class where every, boy strives to be first and the standard is corresponding- ly high the prize is really worth ΠΟ one need be wianing, and ashamed of not wining it.

I need add nothing to what your headmaster has said, but I want to say, and now that I have seen you I can confidently say, that they deserve the highest praise for the results that they have helped you to achleve. DISCIPLINE

And now I have only one more word to say. Your headmaster has spoken in high terms of the dis- cipline of the school. It is not à pleasant word, and it doesn't quite convey what I want to say to you. When I was a boy at school I think I would have defined 1-discipline as the painful punish- ment inficted when I was found out in something that it was often great fun to do. What I mean tu- day. is something rather different and perhaps I may call it respect for law and order. It doesn't pay in this Hfe to be unruly or selfish. You all know how in your football team the selfish player is not only a nuisance but a useless member of the side. The boy you want there is the boy who will play unselfishly as a member of the team," not wanting to score all the goals him- self but striving to do his best in combination with all the other members to ensure the victory of his side. That is a useful lesson ENGLISH CLASS PRIZES

think they are justified in carrying are certain people at the Zoo who

out any policy as long as it pays.

"A large number of us, however, belleve otherwise. As it la 1:0 person genuinely Interested in animals would go to the Zoo in the summer months."

Among the opponents of "Pets' Corner" is Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell, Secretary to the Society until 1935. In his autobiography he writes: "I am very doubtful. If the making of wild animals into 'pets' should be encouraged, and to me at least it is distasteful to see children hugging and mauling wild animals”.

Opposition will be expressed, it, is expected, at the next business meeting of the Zoological Society. on November 17, and a review of the policy of the Society, it is understood, is to be demanded at the annual general meeting next April,

The present Secretary of the Zoo is Dr. Julian S. Huxley.
