New Plant To Rival is about to be enlarged.
Cotton
Commercial Production In England Starting
The forthcoming production in England on a commercial scale of
"cotine," a new natural fibre said
to rival cotton in its textile possi- bilities has been announced in Londen.
Cotine Is a perennial plant which will grow in most temperate climates and in subtropical re- glons: It is less costly to produce than cotton, it is claimed, and bas a staple strength of 40 per cent. higher.
A company has been formed in England, after many years of botanical and chemical research, to exploit this new discovery. The company owns supplies of roots and seeds of the plant, as well as the process for treatment of the raw fibre.
An agreement has been reached, it is stated, with an Italian con- pany, which will start planting in Italy under licence. Licences have also been issued in Canada and Poland, Negotiations with Sweden and Japan are in progress, the latter country being especially in terested, owing to the difficulty in importing raw materials on a count of the present war with China.
The cotine fibre can be spun on existing machines, alone or in combination with other comimer- cial fibres. Highly satisfactory re- sulta are claimed from a yarn
This will necessitate large addi- tions to the current programme. Next year's. Navy Estimates must provide for a substantial quota of new tonnage.
The 1938 programme has, it is understood, already been drafted tentatively. As the restoration of the battle fleet is regarded as
being of first importance, priority
will be given to new battleships..
QUICKER THAN SCHEDULE
The naval authorities have de- tailed knowledge of the produc- tive capacity of the shipbuilding and kindred industries, as well as of the stocks of steel and other essential materials. The national
producing resources for armaments are much greater than are generally realised, especially abroad.
