Man Pau, a fireman, whose hands were terribly scarred told the course that he had just come off watch on the night of the disaster and was taking a bath in the stern of the ship when he heard an explosion. After "everyone had tried to put out the fire that had broken out, several were placed in a boat and left the ship.

DEATH BY
MISADVENTURE
But Jury Adds Strong
|
Rider Of Censure
A verdict of death by misadven- ture and a rider, of strong censure, were returned by a Coroner's jury at the Central Magistracy yester day at the conclusion of the in- quiry into the circumstances sur- rounding the death of Kwan Lin, 33-year old painter, who died "of arsenic polsoning after swallowing some liquid in the Royal Naval Naval Dockyard on October 9, and who had said, just before he died, that he had probably swallowed white-ant polson in mistake for tea.

Th's jury comprised Messrs. J. Grudley (foreman), Chan Ping- suen and Sim Che-chuen, while Mr. RA. D. Forrest sat as Corner. Inspector A. V. Baker was present for the Police,
Most of the evidence had already been given last week and yester- day Tam Chim, No. 1 foreman of the Kin Lee contractors in charge, of all work at the Dockyard, told the Corner what he

No tea or tea-pot, was kept in the shed, but there was one bowl such as would be used for drinking tea.
FIVE GALLON DRUM Sub-Inspector W. N. Dark'n Sald he visited that "section of the Naval Dockyard ralled off for the Hin Lee Contractors on October 11.

and took the liquid away in tins. He did not see or hear either of them ask permission of anyone, and they } could have taken away the poison with anyone knowing.
SUPERVISION LAX After retiring the jury returned their verdict and the
foreman added: The evidence given about the issue of the white ant poison showed that the supervision was lax and careless in the extreme. We suggest that the store-keeper be severely censured for leaving his storehouse 80 that anyone. might enter in his absence, And. we suggest that in future the con- tractor himself be held responsible for the proper tins being kept and returned after use, such tins to be marked "Polson." and that no white-ant polson, be given out without a properly signed order for the same."
The Corner: I might say I agree with your verdict.
