Addressing the meeting Excellency
his expressed high appreciation of the cordial welcome extended to his wife and himself. He took the liberty of expressing the pride he felt at standing there for the first time as Chancellor of the University. He acknowledged with high ap- preciation of the Invitation to be the Union's patron.
Speaking as the new patron or the University Union he said that on studying the rules he observed that it was necessary for every club and society to be affilated with the Union. He also observ- ed that the Union might, if per- mitted, appeal to the Couneli for Anance. He said that the seal of discipline was coated with the sugar of Anance.
Speaking of the athletic side of the Unlos His Excellency recalled once upon a time work and play were antagonistic to each other and later "play" became known under the new idea which "termed It-recreation." which__is___more_ closely linked to work and which produces better work to be done. Complimenting the Chairman ou his speech His Excellency said he sincerely hoped that the Union will rise from strength to strength and that it may really prove to be a nursery from which future lead- ers and true servants of China might be drawn.
HIS Excellency concluded by saying that, if the Union abided by their principles truly he has doubt that they will meet with

Existing stocks of the most essen- tal drugs and apparatus in the country were insumcient to meet the sudden urgent demands of the situation. Appeals were therefore sen all over the world for red cross supplies, I should like to say here that the response has been magnificent. HONG KONG'S PART The public of Hong Kong has been in the forefront of the cam- pa'gn on behalf of the wounded and the destitute in the war areas.
Nothing has struck me so vividly as the enthusiasm and energy with which every section of the popu- lation in this colony has taken up the work of relief. While it is in- vidious to mention names, I must pay a special tribute to the ladies of Hong Kong who have set a wonderful example to their sisters
