CATTLE DISEASE
IN GERMANY
Berlin, Nov. 4. The German nation, in an off- cial communique, has been. In- formed of the gravity of the mouth-and-foot disease in western Germany, where, despite every ffort to localise the epidemie, up- ards of two thousand farma have lost a great part of their cattle stock.
As one of the first consequences of this epidemie. Germany sees erself compelled to import a large aaditional consignment of butter It appears that the epidemic found its way to Europe by the import of infected cattle from North Africa via Marseilles, and spread quickly through France, Belgium -Luxemburg, then affecting western
Germany.
The German authorities have been combatting the disease by placing the strictest restrictions on travel in the infected areas of the Pfalz, the Saar, Baden, where bans have been placed
football matches, political and, social meet- Ings.
on
The disease has so far not ap- peared in its most malignant form, although it has already meant the destruction of a large number of calves and young pigs.
It is recalled that the foot-and mouth disease of 1920-21 cost the German Reich 480 million Reichs- marks, but it is hoped that the present outbreak, which is or a milder sort, will not reach that stage.-
