"STRENGTH OF NEW WARSHIPS

HOW THE HUNTER STOOD MINE EXPLOSION

In a paper read at Glasgow re- cently before the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland by Mr. H. Stanley, of the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors, some interesting detalis were made public of the damage ruffered by HM. destroyers Hunter when she struck a mine off the coast of Spain on May 13 last. Destroyers, being built chiefly for speed, have of being insy the appearance craft. In particular, destroyers built for the Royal Navy of recent years, of which the Hunter was one of the newest, have been cri- ticized for the lightness of their build compared with earlier tor- pedo craft; and the opinion-un- instructed, no doubt--has been ex-" pressed that they could not stand up to the stresses to which they would be subject in bad weather

or in war.

These gloomy forebodings have been dispelled by the experience of the Hunter. Her hull was probably lighter than those of earler des troyers, but lightness was achieved by the free use of special steels, for both plating and rivets, and of electric welding in place of rivets wherever sultable, and not at the expense of structural strength. Though there was no experience of how these new materials or met- hode would stand up to damage by explosion, the soundness of the their judgment which dictated adoption has been amply vin- dicated.

MOST VULNERABLE POINT The explosion occurred at the. most vulnerable point-that is, at the bulkhead separating two main compartments, whereby both of them were immediately flooded. An amount of water equal to two- thirds of her standard displace- ment entered the snip; the hull was in efect cut in two below the upper deck; and the boiler

was steaming at the which she time was lifted from its seating and thrown to the side of the ship.
