"RAY" YOU CANNOT CHEAT

Records People Who Enter Exhibition

A giant "thermometer" has been set up in the Paris Exhibitioni grounds to record automatically. the number of people who enter the 35 gates.

It consists of a 60-feet high neon tube which lights up in sections as the visitors pass the turnstiles.

Each section of the tube re- presents 200 entries and when that number of visitors has entered a section lights up. The "thermo- meter" has a total counting capacity of 10,000.

When this figure has been reached all the light sections are automatically extinguished and another 10,000 is added to the, grand total of entries shewn on a scoreboard attached to the base. of the "thermometer."

Counting the entries at each of the exhibition's 35 gates, compris- Ing a total of 190 entrances, is çar- ried out by an automatic electric device.

HOW IT WORKS

Each visitor cuts a light ray as he enters and an apparatus re- cords the number of times the ray has been broken. A mechanical totalisator at each gate sends the figures to the "thermometer.”

In order that a false result shall not be obtained by walking sticks and umbrellas breaking the rays, a special device has been incor- porated in the Eght ray machine which prevents any breaking of the ray lasting less than one- quarter of a second from being recorded.

Total entries now number more than 14,050,000.

OLDEST CIRCUS ELEPHANT

Death At Age Of 108

Jenny, the famous 108-year-old Dutch circus elephant, is dead. Or colossal size, she weighed 3 tons 18

She collapsed while being taken to Rotterdam from the Dutch seaside resort of Scheveningen where the Barragant Circus; of which she was the oldest elephant, was giving performances.

Rushed to the zoo at The Hague, A veterinary surgeon "atrove" in vain to restore her health. Ex- treme age is given as the cause of her death.

..

Most beloved of all the Serra- sani Circus elephants, she had. been allowed a complete rest affict the circus fire at Antwerp some years ago in which she was severely burnt.

As leader of the circus elephant troupe, Jenny was strictly obeyed. she had a dangerous temper when roused and some" years ago she killed with her trunk an atten- dant who had teased her.

In physique, she was a beautiful specimen and her body, it is ex- pected, will be placed on view In the Museum of Natural History either In Leiden: (Holland) or in Dresden (Germany).
