A spokesman of "the" Shanghai Municipal Council when question- ed regarding the alleged danger to the International Settlement as contained in the pamphlets said that there is no need for any alarm. He admits that the hordes of refugees in the Settlement pre- sents An urgent problem to the authorities, but spoke with assur- ance when he declared that they had the situation well in hand.

The majority of the refugees are an uncomplaining, cheerful lot. he. revealed. They are appreciative of all that is being done for them. and are more anxious to assist China in her struggle, than to consider their own. personal fate. Hence the spirit they are showing is one of co-operation-co-opera- tion with the authorities who are doing all in their power to cope with their present needs. Another Pelping message stated that Yenching University has also closed down. The University was opened sobre time ago but Japanese soldiers arrested some twenty students without revealing their present whereabouts. Several other undergraduates are missing. News of the closing of the university was confirmed by letter from Dr. Leighton Stuart, ̈president of that institution.--
