STRATEGIC GAINS IN NORTH CHINA

Continued from Page 1:

AN IMPETUOUS LEADER Lieutenant General Itagaki, a **advance leading spirit of the school" of the Kwantung Army, is an impetuous commander whose tactics might have succeeded had he encountered Chinese comman- ders less determined than those who opposed him.

In cominand of the Chinese massed cavalry (on this

front, General Ma Chan Shan, hera, of the Nonal Bridge engagement in Manchuria, is one of the most re- solute leaders of the Chinese Nationalist Army. It will be re- membered that after the Nonni Battle, making his base at Tsitsi- har, General Ma Chan Shan fought the Japanese for two years in North Manchuria and came within an ace of capturing Harbin.

With hardly a cartridge left. General Ma and his cavalry men, on foot, retreated across the lofty Kingnan Mountains and surren- dered to the Soviet Russians by crossing their frontier at Manchul. General Ma returned to China while his men travelled by way of Sinklang and now, equipped with fresh mounts, they are opposing the cavalry of General Mura, who, it is reliably reported, was caught In one of the raids by the Chinese cavalry, and was severely wounded.

LACK OF GUNS

The Shansi forces, under Gener- al Yen Hsi Shan, form the bulk of the infantry opposing the Japanese motorized units. Though numerically superior, the lack of long range field artillery would have seriously handicapped these troops in the eperations on the plains of Tatung and the flat plateaux around Talyuanfu. SCOUT MAGAZINES

It can truly be said that few movements devoted to the build-

ing up of youth have met with the phonomenal success of the Boy Scout organisation founded by that great Briton. Lord Baden cowell,

The movement has caught the popular imagination of the youth of the whole world and there are few countries to-day which has no scout movement and also its sister organisation, the Girl Guides.
