your irreparable weakness!" This activitles of the Japanese in China cowardly individual, who not only and whose les have been exposed | covera his identity under the and 'contradicted by the Japanese cloak of anonymity but makes themselves... It does not bespeak | doubly certain of not being traced well of the fact that the Japanese | by writing in script letters, tells are spending (I am told) Y.30,000.- | quite frankly what the British 000 a year as compared with the authorities should have realised a paltry $200,000 spent by the Chin-decade ago, for Mussolini made Government. Perhaps Bugl-known his intentions long before yama and Co., might look into this and issue a new statement.

tse

WORTHLESS PLEDGES The world is given another "solemn promise" by Suglyama and his henchmen that Japan has no territorial ambitions in China, that Japan bas absolutely no intention to retain or annex territory which she has seized from us and which she is still attempting to seize, and that Japan has absolutely no in- tention to violate the spirit of the "Open Door Policy" in China, etc.

Such "solemn pledges" are worth- less and rean nothing and we Chinese are prepared to accept them as nothing but Abs. Japan's

· Manchuria şand past actions in China have proven that her word cannot be accepted. Manchuria has been taken from us and the Japs have set up a puppet state. where the Open Door has Deen closed tight against all-comers, excepting the Japanese, who now fealize to their sorrow that the annexation of Manchuria (for it le nothing else) is costing them for more than they had expected and that they are getting next to no- thing in return for the,, millions spent.

In North China; a bogus regime has been set up.

described as autonomous, and the Chinese peo- ple, of these places have been kept under the heel of the Japanese militarists. Smuggling has been openly carried on and the, people have been doped until they are now nothing but living corpses. which is exactly what the Japs

want.

TREATIES SCRAPPED

}

It would be superfluous for me to deal with Sugiyama's statements concerning the Nine-Power Treaty guaranteeing China's Integrity and the Kellogg-Briand Pact outlawing war as an instrument of setting disputes.

Readers of this article and the whole world, as well as the Japan- ese themselves, know very well that these treaties have been scrapped by Japan and are con- sidered nothing but mere scraps of paper. Even the son of Japan's Premier, Prince Konoye admits that Japan has broken her pledged word.

To reply to the Matsui statement would be a pure waste of time, as It is such piffle and rubbish, and below one's dignity. Our military spokesman in Shanghai has well summarized the situation, where he said, "He's talking through his hat," while the Nanking spokesman put it nicely when he described it as "a fantastic dream."

I shall only be too pleased to cross pens with any Japanese here who wishes to answer the my state- ments. This is an open challenge.

JAPANESE REPORTER AND DR. KUNG

Incident At Singapore Dockside

Singapore. Oct. 11.

A stir was caused when a Japan- ese approached "Dr. H. H. Kung Just before his departure from here for China in the Victoria to- day against the advice of Dr. Kung's bodyguard.

Dr. Kung granted an interview to the Japanese who is a journal- ist on a Singapore Japanese paper. Dr. Kung later, told Reuter: "I told him that China would call an armistice as soon as Japan gave the lead."

After shaking hands the Japan- ese journalist bowed ceremoniously.

A man who claimed to be Count De La Feld was at Truro, Corn- wall, recently, sentenced to one month's imprisonment on a charge of obtaining goods to the value of £7 17. 8d. by false pretences.

He was Barry Shafto Jackson, aged 25.

Mr. RL Frank; prosecuting. said Jackson went to Messrs.

Timothy Whites and Taylors, sald he was Count De La Fela, gave a reference a bank in Parklane, Lon- don, and on the strength of his statement was given goods to the value of £7 17s. 84. Later the manager saw in a London news- paper what he thought was a

to the address the Count had given, and found the house shut

up..

Detective Sergeant Rudge, of Bristol, continued Mr. Frank, went to a Bristol hotel and saw a wo- man. He followed her to another hotel and there saw an entry in the name of Mr. and Mrs. Beau-.. mont. In the room they occupied he saw Jackson with a woman, was his wife. who, presumably. When cautioned. Jackson Bald. "You have made a mistake. since 1922 been suffering from two diseases, namely megalo- mania and anglophobia. Like all mad people, his depth of cunning completely derived his prospection photograph of Jackson. He went riëtim, but his plans have now been latd. bure, unfortunately, too late. I fear, to avert a general world cataclysm the horrors of which have every prospect of paling into insignificance the slaughter of the 1914-18 upheaval. To that extent I blame our own country for her lack of vision: but this is no time for arguing over past mistakes. While every nerve must now be strained to Avold war if it can be avoided, the surest way of doing that is to harness all available resources 'of the forces of civilisation and de- мостасу

demand. and un'tedly without fear and with authority,

and that barbarism

wholesale murder shall cease, forthwith. If that warning remains heeded, then force must be ap- plied, because neglect of this duty can only result in postponement of the conflict, while Japan lays waste China, for the mad brain can only interpret humani tarianism as fear and cowardice. As you say in your excellent editorial the time for definite action has come. Let there be no further delay-Yours, etc.
