It has been designed for the study or heating problems as these affect the normal citizen in his

home.

The "house" is built on the house within a house" principle. inside are the test rooms, and any form of heating equipment to be studied. Outside, but separ- ated by an air space from the test room, are four further walls, the temperature of

сап. which

be accurately controlled by elaborate system of heating and cooling, panels.

The result is that the test room can be exposed to weather of any desired temperature merely by adjusting the control system.

Later the effect of air movement outside will be taken into account. Provision has been made for the entry of controlled amounts of fresh air into the test room, to simulate vary varying degrees of "draughtiness."

An "artificial man" can be used to record not only the tempera- ture (an uncertain guide to com- fort) but the feeling of coldness which a draugnt produces.

HEAT LEAKAGE The "house" and Scientiste hopes in regard to it are described in the annual report of the Build- ing Research Board which was issued recently. First teste are being made with the conventional hot-water radiator, it is explained. because "the majority of heating systems still use it."

Heating panel systems will be the next to be studled

One curious discovey made is that very little extra heat is lost by putting the heating equipment immediately under the window, It had been expected that quite an appreciable amount of heat would pass straight "out of doors", if this arrangement were adopted. Another new laboratory is to be used to measure the amount of heat which finds its way through the outer walls of a normal bouse. Solid brick walls and cavity brick walls will be the first to be tested. Later--when sultable. standards have been obtained-the inves- tigation will be extended to cover

a wide variety of other materials and forms of construction. This question of heat leakage is of considerable importance in modern nat bulding. where lightness spells

Gallery Graves 2,000 Years Old

Important discoveries at a me- galithic period burial cairn near Draperstown, Co: Londonderry, have been made by archaeologists of Queen's University, Belfast.

They report that the calmn con- tains two gallery graves about 2.000 years old and that numerous

flint tools have been found,

The chief discovery consists of an old habitation site over which a megalith had been erected, and hearths where the builders did

their cooking in round-bottomed pots were excavated.

The pots themselves had been made by hand on the spot, and one of the interesting finds is half-burned peat which they had used as fuel.

This discovery provides oldest evidence known of the of peat as fuel in Ireland,
