R.A.F. BALLOONS GIVEN MONTH TO

IN FLAMES

Destruction By Lightning

Four captive balloons belonging to the R.A.F. were destroyed dur- ing

at 2 violent thunderstormI. Cardington, Bedfordshire, recently. The balloons were being used for the training of R.A.F. personnel as Instructors for the Auxiliary Air Force balloon units which ure shortly to be formed. Ten balloons were in the air, almost hidden by the clouds, when the storm occur- red and, in rapid succession. four of them came down in flames. No" one was injured.

Mr. William Fossey, who was at work near the aerodrome. said that he saw lightning run up the cable of one balloon, then there was a small flame followed by a blaze. The balloon floated down towards a tent. He shouted to Some alrmen who were inside the tent to run for their lives since he thought that the balloon would fall on them. The airmen ran, but the balloon w(LN completely burned out before it reached the tent.

A garage proprietor who lives near the aerodrome said that "he was wondering whether the bal- loons would be struck by lightning when there was a big crash of thunder and he saw a flash sweep one of the balloons. It acruss burst into flames and came down. A few

another minutes later caught fire and was followed soon after by a third. In spite of tor- rential rain. the wreckage of the Calloons was still burning when it reached the ground.
