Aviation In The

Pacific

NEW BASES FOR

REFUELLING!

Events of considerable impor- tance to the Empire and British aviation have taken place recently in the Pacife.

The cruiser Leander, it is under- stood, recently sent landing parties ashore to the small islands of Henderson, Ducie and Ceno, to the north of Pitcairn, and hoisted the Union Jack.

These small uninhabited islands, almost midway between New Zea- land and South America, might well play an Important part in British air development and de- fence in the Southern Seas.

While no official report has yet been received from the Leander. the news of annexation is wel- comed and accepted as correct in aviation circles.

Trans-Pacific which yearly be- comes of more moment, would hardly be possible were it not for the little coral islands with their smooth lagoons-ideal landing places-which dot the map.

The Pan-American Pacific ser vices. for instance, depend upon the chain of Islands which in re- cent years have been annexed in the name of the United States.

Tiny Islets which a few years ago possessed no significance. and were, indeed, regarded as nuisances by the countries owning them, have now assumed great importance" as" potential wireless stations and re- fuelling bases for aircraft.

BAD BARGAINS

Their vast new significarice is now thoroughly appreciated, and Britain must regret bad bargains she made in the first quarter of this century when she bartered away several of these points. Greater regard is likely to be paid

PARADE OF ITALIAN GRENADIERS

The Italian flag was raised above the billets of the Savoy Grenadiers in Kiaochow Road during a ceremony in which the whole battalion participated. Above, the Italian Consul-General In Shanghal, Comna. Luigi Neyrone is seen arriving, and below the parade presents arms as the flag is raised to the masthead. Salating in the foreground is the commanding officer of the Grenadiers, Lleuk-Col. Andreini.

garded as "useless" fragments of our far-flung Empire.

In this search for potential air bases and strong points, born of the new strategy that has inevit- ably come with air development, most of the Powers are taking their part. In the Far North, Russia is

obviously intent on staking her clalm.

In the South, and barticularly in the Pacific, the United States. Britain, and France are taking hands in the game. Bahrein was established as a British base just two years ago, and last year the United States claimed the Baker, Jarvis, and Howland Islands, which for years had appeared on the map as British. There,, lying between Honolulu and Fill, are regarded as of considerable importance.
