MALAYA MAY

SEND HOCKEY

XI TO TOKYO

1940 Olympic Games

That there is every prospect of sending a representative Malayan hockey eleven to the 1940 Olymple Games in Tokyo was mentioned by Mr F. J. L. Mayger, president of the Singapore Hockey Associa- tlon, at the annual general meeting of the Association held at the Singapore Cricket Club, recently."

The meeting was well attended by members of the various clubs afltated to the Association.

It was also proposed that a Malayan Hockey Association should be formed. Mr. Mayger explained· the benefits derived from the organisation of such an Associa tion. At the present moment, the arranging of matches with over- sens teams all fell on the shoulders of the local Association as no other organisation would take the

chance.

A meeting was held after the last Colony-F.M.S. hockey classic to discuss the formation of such an Association and after very close consideration, it was found es- sential that such a body be formed.

The meeting also approved of the suggestion of having a North versus South match instead of the annual Colony-FMS. encounter which has been in existence for the past 15 years.

After the minutes of the last general meeting had been adopted. the President stated that in ad- altion to the annual report which had already been in their hands. | he wished, to comment on the Press controversy which they had read during the last season.

LETTERS TO THE PRESS

"I wish to remind all members, of hockey, clubs that communica- tions to the executive of the Hockey Association, beth adminis- trative and selection, should pe direct and not. by letters to the press, particularly anonymous ·lèt ters," said Mr. Mayger.

"You élect members at this meeting to look after your inter- ests, and if you disagree with what they are doing, or not doing, take it up with your own club. If your contention is supported by" your Club, they will receive a reply. If the reply is unsatisfactory you have your remedy in calling an extraordinary general meeting and changing your officials.

"For instance, it often happens that a star. individual player is omitted from a team because, in the opinion of the selectors. It is better to field a combination into which the individual star player would not At. If you ask the Association officials instead of writting to the Press they will answer you to that effect and I feel sure that they will Justify their choice.

Commenting on the French de- marche with the Japanese Govern- ment at Tokyo, official circles here "Hockey is one of the most ama-state that the demarche represents teur of all sports and this writing to the press by player members is definitely not in the best interests of the game. I sincerely hope that the various clubs will support the Singanore Hockey "Association on this point by taking all possible steps to prevent their members airing their grievances in public.

"We have in Singapore keen and ethicient professional sports writers and I would recommend that we get on with the game and leave the press to them."
