Pootung, steamed down river again where it is thought they will again attempt landing.

The foreign powers represented by either troops or warships in Shanghai have issued a "joint ap- peal to both sides to refrain from ; fying over the International Set- tlement and French Concession and also to avoid firing anti- aircraft guns in those sectors so as to avoid unnecessary loss of life) or property that may result from stray shells and bombs,

Although the text of the con- versations between Mr. R. G. Howe, British Charge d'Affaires in Shang- hai and Mr. S. Kawagoe, Japanese Ambassador, have not been official- ly released for publication. It is learned from a reliable source that Mr. Howe stressed the following points:-

That the Japanese blockade of the China coast should not affect British shipping; and

That the Japanese should not damage or occupy any of the small, but stretegically placed islands near Hong Kong.

In connections with the blockade, it is learned that a dozen. French destroyers have been deputed to protet French interests in the Kwongchow Bay area.

"A further message was to the effect that the Japanese destroye: which was sunk off the Bocce Tigris Fort a few days ago wa the same one which stopped and searched the 8.5. Taishan which was on her way from Hong Kong to Canton recently and which, as result, returned to the Colony.

and, it is pointed out, that this will satisfy Italy's earlier demand that the piracy question should be handled by the Committee and not by a separate conference at Nyon.

Adopted originally in Interests of safer flying, the slotted wing is nowadays equally important as a means of augmenting the speed range of the modern heavily load- ed high performance aeroplane- British Wireless
