TOKYO'S
NEGATIVE
ATTITUDE
London, Aug. 25. China has notified Great Britain of her readiness to accept. In prin- cipled, the British proposal for the mutual withdrawal of the Chinese and Japanese troops, including the warships.
Japan's Anal reply has not yet been received, but the British Government has hitherto been deeply disappointed at Tokyo's negative attitude.
Japanese circles in London be- eve that, with the ld of the
reinforcements newly-landed
of Japanese troops, it will not take long for them to drive the Chinese qut of Shanghai, and with the ensuing displacement of the war area, the need for a neutral zone will disappear.
Although France has from the beginning favoured the beginning favoured the British proposals. It 15 understood "that the United States replied that their effective- ness has entirely depended on the Japanese consent which has, su far. not appeared to be forth- coming.
The Chinese decision will pre- sumably have no more practical effect than to throw the onus of refusal on the Japanese.- Reuter.

At two o'clock in the afternoon, Chinese reinforcements from the rear were rushed to Lottenchen by two routes over Chiale Road and Yuta! Ruzd. Finding themselves surrounded the Japanese set fre
