WOMEN WILL WEAR A SHOE AND

CALL IT A HAT

Fashion, they say, goes to ex- tremea. That is specially true of the new

Ideas for autumn and winter 1937, when Schiaparelli puts a shoe on a woman's head and calls it a hat!

The shoe is not, it is true. made of leather, but it is a shoe just the same.

As this designer shows It is mude from black felt, worn sole upwards with the toe pointing forward; and with a pink velvet heel cocked in the air by way of trimming. or to introduce colour note-take- it elther way you like:

had

You would think woman learnt a "lesson. once and for all, about snakes.

But 1937 fashions introduce the snake dress. Tls its almost closer than a glove, is made from a dark green Recked with gold lamé, with a slightly blurred pattern.

The appropriate Headdress with this is one that rises 'high above the wearer's head and suggests a cobra about to strike.

THE FRYING-PAN HAT

Millinery this season is going to be a difficult problem.

Here are some styles from which - woman is invited to make her choice.

A "Jelly bag" model with a pointed crown;

A similar model with a rounded summit outlined with monkey fur tumbling about the wearer's cars:

Flat hats with long. beaklike brims;

3

Hats like frying-pans; Hats Hike saucepans, with wide brims or no brime at all;

Monkey caps trimmed with a two-foot qui stripped of its plumage;

-Fancyglengarrisa — decorated with a tuft of ribbons or a sprig of purple heather (the influence of the Queen's Scottish ancestry

keeps on cropping up);

Welsh hats with brims; Saucer caps with no brims; Hats with tall crowns" forked like

serpent's tongue and worn at an angle of 45 de- grees;

a

Others that look like nothing so much as half a propeller.

"VICTORIA REGINA" STYLES "Victoria Regina" seems to have exercised a considerable influence on fashion, including the use of. plaid fabrics for anything from evening dresses to gloves for day- time weaz

An 1889 fashion is applied to evening frocks.

Below swather bodice the skirt is drawn tightly round the figure. At the 'back a loose panel goes flowing down to form train with a bustelike effect. The skirt is ground length.

a

Molyneux is one of those who have been inuenced by Victor-. lan fashions. There is an 1850 style interpreted in Lyons velvet, brocades and stiff satins,

Skirts are held out crinoline fashion to sway and swing round the wearer.

Bodices are swathed round the

figure above the waist, shoulders are bare, arms uncovered,

FEATHERS OVER THE EAR

The appropriate headdress to wear with a dress of this kind is a couple of ostrich feathers at-. tached above the left ear, and sweeping downwards ΟΥΟΣ the shoulder,

In the early years of the cen- tury sults were trimmed with with military braid and to-day Parla is showing black or pavy blue frocks and suita trimmed with rows of mohair braid in different widths.

It is not only day dresses that have short skirta.

Molyneux shows evening frocks with skirts well above ankie length, and "bandage", bodices, . for young.

These are made in stiffened velvets, stiffer satin on stiff metal brocades, "and trimmed with für and flowers.

In Summer Blue

Ideal for summer daya te winanme Cecilia Parker'a dreau of sheer naVJ crepe printed with flowers of royal blue, powder blue, and white. At the base of the V neck she wears a cor- sage of randa dowers-light blue with navy centers. The waist is cul bigh in front, and the blonde player wears an interesting aash of twisted blue and white crepe. Notice, too. the picturesque sleeve treatment of- fected by bands of thirring. Har se cessories are navy, Miss Parker is currently playing opposite George O'Brien in "Hollywood Cowboy."☛

houses for knitted sults and dresses have already shown their collection." One is Wanda Kofler and the other Alleen Rice. Wanda Kofler shows wool brocade in highly- coloured flowered designs to liven up the severely modern silhouette. Plain surfaced wools are used for the day suits and often the coat and

Jackets shown by Alleen Rice are shorter and the skirts a little wider. She uses bairy wools, georgette yarn and ribbon. The stitches include cloque and diagonal herringbone effects. The colours are browns, greens, “burni onion, "chamois" and "'exhibi-
