Congress Asked For Funds

Washington, Aug, 4.

It is officially announced that the Navy Department ask Congress at the next session for funds with which to build two battleships and two Bght cruisers with the object of building up to the limit of the old London Naval Treaty.

From that time on, the United States will follow a programme of replacement as its vessels become over age or obsolete.

The new battleships, as well as those two whose construction was authorised this session, are replac- ing four of the oldest of the seven now classifed as "over age."

The Navy Department has not indicated whether a complete re- placement programme is envisaged. but it is officially stated that the fleet will be maintained" at a ma- ximum of 15 battleships, allowed under the old treaty, and that it is at present intended to retire the old battleships as and when new ones are constructed to take their places.

The same programme apples to, cruisers.- Beuter
