Japanese Returns To Shanghai

Freed, after ove days detention az suspicion or espionage, Suteab Sato, a geologist attached to the Shanghal Science Institute, Route Ghisi, reurned to Shanghai'; from Hankow in the Rakuyo Maru, states the "North China Daily News."

Looking none the worse for his experience. Mr. Sato told the "Shanghai Nippo" that this "Jail visit" was "not so bad," were it not for the crowds of spectators. who flocked to the little town of" Patung. northern Hupeh, to see the imprisoned "Japanese.

Mr. Sato admitted that he had given up his efforts to secure the release of his Chinese assistant, td, now being held in a Hankow jall,' at the request of Li's family. Mr. Sato said he left Shanghai late in April for a geological tour of the upper reaches of the Yangtze. While travelling in Szechuen, he injured his leg and on May 17 ar- rived in Ichang to receive treat- ment.

Before returning to the drabness of Shanghal, Mr. Sato decided to visit Sanklang, one of the famous scenic spots in the upper reaches of the river. He accordingly hired a Chinese boat, which brought him and Li to Patung on June 1.

STORY OF ARREST

"The boat was anchored along- side the bank and I was preparing funch," said Mr. Bato, recounting the story of his capture.
