Convicted Of Fraud

The two Indian Police Guarda. Gagindar Singh and, Baba · Singh who were charged with forging the name of Jawala Singh to a debit note with intent to defraud on May 25 and receiving a sum of $300 on May 25 and similar charges relating to $130, were convicted and sentenced to four months' and six months' hard labour, res- pectively, by Mr. K. M. A. Barnett at the Kowloon Magistracy yester- day when they appeared on re- mand.

The prosecution was conducted by Divisional Inspector Russell and Detective Inspector Carey.

Olving judgment his Worship said:

I find as a fact that Arst ¡de- fendant "on May 25, about 11.45, accompanied by another Indian, went to the Hong Kong Saving Bank and there obtained $300 by forging the name of Jawala Singh to a debit slip and by presenting Jawala Singh's bank book. The dog was seen by an Indian constable who attempted to catch it, put a person, who appeared to be a house boy whistled for the dog which followed him back to the house. The constable then followed the boy to the house, and requested to see the defendant in order to get the correct name and address. It was alleged by the constable that the defendant had told him to leave the premises. Eventually he was able to obtalii the necessary information.

Defendant's plea was that she did not tell the constable to leavs. She added that the dog was a pet and not a watch dog, and that it was dincult to obtain a muzzle to suit the dog since it was a small animal A fine of. $10 was imposed.
