CHAIRMAN'S SPEECH Addressing the gathering the chairman said:
"Your Lordship. Dr. Wellington, Ladles and Gentlemen:
The history at the movement, which has culminated in the erec- tion of this new children's hospital, dates back tó 1934, when the nursing sisters of the Precious Blood realized that their institus tion was far too small and short of equipment to cope with the demand for medical treatment of the young ones of the poor. An apeal, therefore, was made to the public of the Colony for means of expansion.
FINANCIAL DRIVE
In response to the sisters' appeal Li 1934, a few child lovers and my- selt formed a committed to ex- plore the possiblities of organizing a larger and up-to-date hospital to take the place of the present institution.
A plan of the proposed hospital was prepared, and the cost of erection. was estimated at about $80,000. A campaign for raising funds was launched, and by August 7, of the same year, a sum of about $17,000 was raised by the arrange- ment that the chairman add the two vice-chairmen of the com- mittee be responsible for collect- ing at least $5,000 each, while the rest of the members $500 each.
Ladies and gentlemen, a period of three years of anxieties is not without its reward, for the com- bined efforts of our committee has resulted in what" we now see-a glorious triumph, and à permanent Institution for giving medical re- Het of those in need of it,

an encore, but were compelled to desist when the Chair filed onto the platform, and consoled them by selections from "Norma" and "Forza del destion." The solos were sung by Miss N. Hyndman who has a clear sweet voice, and gave a very musicianly rendering, though it, would have been better to have transposed the music into a lower key, as the very high notes were rather beyond her compass
The Choir sang splendidly and gave most excellent support, and the accompaniments mtrably played by Rev. Father Riganti.

Later in the evening we had the pleasure of hearing them sing a charming part song composed by Father Riganti. A bright and rhythmical song of spring which the Choir sang with evident appre- clation.
.
A Coleratura Soprano (Mrs. 8: Choy) "sang delightfully "Ardon gl'incenst" by Donizetti; and later she and Mr. D'Aquino sang two brilliant numbers from "Rigoletto" in which the tenor's smooth voice blended delightfully with the clear and sweet soprano notes of Mrs. Choy.
The popular Eastern Hymn (from Cavalleria Rusticana). and the "Barcarolle" from the "Tales of Hoffman" brought this delightful concert to a conclusion.
ALL-ROUND EXCELLENCE The large room of the Club de Recreto makes a splendid concert hall and is very good for sound.
Maestro Gualdi must be con- gratulated on the all-round excel- leuce or his concert. He played a number
of difficult accompani- ments with great skill, and was a most inspiring conductor. It is a great pity that there was such a small audience, and one begins to Dr. Wellington, it is very Atting wonder whether the Colony is be- that this building should be open-coming non-musical- few years ed by you, but before I request you ago such a programme would have to do so, I take this opportunity to attracted a full-house of wish you many years of happiness music-lovers. It is most regret and good health in your well-eam-table that such a delightful pro- ed retirement.
On behalf of the hospital com- mittee, the sisters and the des- titute, I would say that we are deeply indebted to you for having consented to spare so much of your [-] valuable time to perform the cere- mony, this afternoon. I now re- quest you sit, to declare the building open.” (Applause).
HON. DR. WELLINGTON
J.
In replying the Hon. Dr. Welling- ton thanked the chairman for in- viting him to perform the open ing ceremony. He said that as there is no hospital in the Colony and Kowloon for the proper-treat- ment of the poor Chinese children," the new children's hospital filled a very vital need. He hoped it would receive the fullest public support.
The speaker then congratulated the fine effort of the Hospital Committee and Bister asnd wished them all good luck and prosperity, and a long- and useful career of public service for the new hospital

AOYAMA CASE
IN SWATOW
(Continued from Page 1)

Kiyoshi Aoyama, consular police- According to a statement, Mr.
man in Swatow, moved on May 22 to the second floor of the Shen- chow Yang-haing's premises with- out official permission. The second sub-station of the Swatow police attempted to interfere with this unwarranted transfer of resl- dence, but the Japanese, instead
of obeying directions, struck and injured two Chinese officials, it is alleged
The Chinese were therefore ob- liged to take Mr. Aoyama to the police station, the statement con- tinues, and subsequently he was transferred to the municipal office. In the evening, he was handed over to the Japanese consulate with a demand that he be properly. punished and that other measures to taken.
A Japanese news agency stated that four demands were presented by Consul punishment of those responsible for the incident,, an apology by Mayor Huang Ping-hsun, compen- sation to Kiyoshi Aoyama, the consular police, and guarantee of the safety of Japanese residents.

According to be same source, the Chinese authorities rejected these demands and exonerated the Chi- nes police for alleged maltreat- ment. Similar demands were, pre- sented by the Swatow mayor.— Union News,
