CHAIRMAN'S SPEECH Addressing the gathering the chairman said:
"Your Lordship. Dr. Wellington, Ladles and Gentlemen:
The history at the movement, which has culminated in the erec- tion of this new children's hospital, dates back tó 1934, when the nursing sisters of the Precious Blood realized that their institus tion was far too small and short of equipment to cope with the demand for medical treatment of the young ones of the poor. An apeal, therefore, was made to the public of the Colony for means of expansion.
FINANCIAL DRIVE
In response to the sisters' appeal Li 1934, a few child lovers and my- selt formed a committed to ex- plore the possiblities of organizing a larger and up-to-date hospital to take the place of the present institution.
A plan of the proposed hospital was prepared, and the cost of erection. was estimated at about $80,000. A campaign for raising funds was launched, and by August 7, of the same year, a sum of about $17,000 was raised by the arrange- ment that the chairman add the two vice-chairmen of the com- mittee be responsible for collect- ing at least $5,000 each, while the rest of the members $500 each.

Later in the evening we had the pleasure of hearing them sing a charming part song composed by Father Riganti. A bright and rhythmical song of spring which the Choir sang with evident appre- clation.

A Coleratura Soprano (Mrs. 8: Choy) "sang delightfully "Ardon gl'incenst" by Donizetti; and later she and Mr. D'Aquino sang two brilliant numbers from "Rigoletto" in which the tenor's smooth voice blended delightfully with the clear and sweet soprano notes of Mrs. Choy.
The popular Eastern Hymn (from Cavalleria Rusticana). and the "Barcarolle" from the "Tales of Hoffman" brought this delightful concert to a conclusion.
ALL-ROUND EXCELLENCE The large room of the Club de Recreto makes a splendid concert hall and is very good for sound.

In replying the Hon. Dr. Welling- ton thanked the chairman for in- viting him to perform the open ing ceremony. He said that as there is no hospital in the Colony and Kowloon for the proper-treat- ment of the poor Chinese children," the new children's hospital filled a very vital need. He hoped it would receive the fullest public support.
