The Quay d'Orsay characterises the visit of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Austria, Dr. Guido Schmidt, as purely a matter of courtesy, intended merely to emphasise the excellent relations existing between the two countries. The dis- cussions between M. Delbox and Dr. Schmidt, however, are re- garded" as necessary to clarly the situation In Central Europe.

It is stated that France fully realises the difficulties of Chan- cellor Schuschnigs to keep the balance between Berlin and Rome, without endangering the trade relations of Austria with her two neighbours.
