Premiere

Queen Mary attended the gala matmée première of "The Mill on the Floss" in aid of University Col-

lege Hospital, at the London Hip- podrome.

Immediately after the film a news reel was shown' of Queen Mary's arrival at the theatre, and a canvas, for a portrait by Miss Flora Lion, was auctioned by Mr. Gilbert Frankau for 150 guineas.

The film, is an adaptation of George Eilot's novel, and the dialogue was supervised by the late Mr. John Drinkwater, who worked continuously on the sets during the whole period of production. It was directed by Tim Whelan. ·

The flood scenes, when the old mill is swept away, are effective; and atter a slow start the story reaches an interesting climax with the deaths of Philip and Lucy Deane.

WESTERN FRONTIER

In a hurricane of hearts, hoots and bullets Ken blazes through a gripping story of cattle rustling. maraudaing Indians, and the machinations of a

blonde. girl bandit of the range.

As an incognito officer of the law Maynard is put on the trail of a desperate band of rustlers, head- ed by a female, night club enter- tainer. Masquerading as a medi- cine show, Ken and his pals non- chalantly invade the bandit stronghold. Upon trying to in- vestigate the outlaws activities, however, Ken is captured and ordered by the bandit queen to be put to death.

From this point the exciting tale swirls to a stirring climax, heaping surprise upon surprise as the film heads toward its final fadeout. The story, written by the star him- self, moves understandingly fast. In addition, it is thoroughly lucid, and has more credibility than most western yarns. And, by virtue of the medicine show episodes, it gives Maynard an opportunity to perform his amazing rope tricks and do some of his cowboy songs.

"Western Frontier" opens at the Alhambra Theatre to-day..

Mr. Charlton did not appear to defend the claim and Mr. Singer was represented and denied the allegations
