MOSCOW TRAINING FOR INDIANS
Mr. Butler (Under Secretary for India) sald in the House of Com-- mons in reply to Captain Ramaay (C. Peebles), that he was aware that a number of free courses at universities in Moscow had been given to Indian students on the understanding that they returned to India 15 Communist mis- sionaries.
Be understood that between 40 and 50 of these students had re turned within the last two years. The number who returned during the previous eight years was very small.
Mr. Butler added that the ma- fority of these students had beer traced by the authorities since their return. Some bad been ar rested and others kept under strict: surveillance.
Asked by Miss Rathbone Ipd. dian students educated in England English Universities) whether In-
had had their books confiscated by the Customs on their return to India, Mr. Butler. presumed that Miss Rathbone was referring to the search of the baggage of an Indian student by the Bombay Customs on January 14 last.
Fifty-two books were seized; 41 of these were Communist books prescribed under the general notf- fcation banning such literature, and five others were coples of a under the Sea Customs Act. publication specifically prohibited
None of the seized books could properly be regarded as text books.
He said. I understand. 1 wish to make no statement. What state- ment can I make? When charged he said, 'I do not realise that I have committed an offence and I protest against being arrested.""
The officer asked for a remand for a week in order that the Direc- tor of Public Prosecutions might be communicated with and the fat of the Attorney-General obtained.
Ludwig was remanded in custody.
