Archbishop Laud was in the true lineage of Matthew Parker, he dreaded enthusiasm in any shape or form. His main pre-oc-- cupation was ritual and he longed for unity among Protestants. Ritual to him meant discipline, and he believed that it should be enforced as such. Hence the stern and terrible lengths to which
he carried his beliefs against the Separatista.
