XII: Puritanism

(BY SCRUTATOR)

In the year 1573 some of the more earnest of the clergy began organising and holding meetings, "prophesyings" they were call- ed. At these meetings questions bearing on religions training and preaching were discussed. Their general attitude was puritanical. The meetings became so infiuential that they came to alarm Elizabeth whereupon a ligh Commission was set up which sought more or less successfully to suppress them.

Anglicanism at this time received

a decided Blip from Hooker's book, The Law of Ecclesiastical Polity" which was published in 1594. His position outlined in his book con- tained a denial, of the supremacy of the Bible, for the solution of all problems of Church government. Clod's law is revealed in the Bible. certainly, but it is also, just as de- finitely and surely, revealed in man's conscience and mind. This latter was undoubtedly an emphasis worthy of the Church's profoundest attention, but it would appear that Hooker merely argued it in support of the Church's existing condition. The State was a necessary and therefore a divine institution, and episcopacy and royal supremacy were justifiable. because through them and their association the unity of Church and State maintained as one divine common- wealth. Hooker's position was de- termined by expediency, and while his theories interested the Puritans they did not satisfy them.

Was

Puritanism, upon which it was a decided advance. The principle of the gathered church" had been well established. The work of the Elizabethan Separatists was bear- ing abundant fruit and their policy. which was the antithests of that set forth by Hooker was finding increasing support among thought- ful people. These advances were dearly bought. John Greenwood, Henry Barrow, John Penry, paid the highest price, and many others endured much suffering and pri- [vation. Yet the position of these men, theologically, was not radical- Ty

But they sought a higher stand- ard of Christian life. and they very definitely stood for the spiritual autonomy of the Church, Iz order that as John Owens said. the Church might become such

a society as hath power, ability and fitness to attain those ends for which Christ

hath ordained Churches." Yet despite these facts, men went into, exile or were forced thereinto for these latter reasons: many were imprisoned, yet the cause of the Separatists increased
