to be nearing fruition last October, the whole question had to be shelved on account of very proper economies by "the Govern- ment here. But now we read in our paper, that trade and revenue are rising and I would take this opportunity of appealing to

the Government "to let us see a new Volunteer Headquarters rising as well. I can assure them that it is a much needed necessity for your efficiency and thus for my Defence schemes. (Applause).

MR. EDMONDSTON'S REPLY

Mr. Edmondston, replying on behalf of the guests, sald

At your last annual supper there was much gloomy foreboding that the necessary curtailments due to would financial stringency

an adverse effect" on the efficiency of the Volunteers, but these fears have not been fuldtled and the gloom must have passed. Much more attention is now being

pald to the legitimate Military re- quirements of this and other out- posts of the Empire and no doubt the money will be found to keep the Corps up to the high standard required of it.

Colonel Anderson has been good enough to thank the heads of firms in Hong Kong for having permitted Volunteers to take part to the Exercises on ordinary work- ing days. I can assure the MIJI- tary Authorities on behalf of my colleagues that we are all ready and willing to assist in making such arrangements as are possible on special occasions to allow our men away. I have often thought that it must be rather galling to regular officer in charge of Volunteers to realise that his men are not wholly at his disposal, and I have known and served in Volunteer Corps. which have been nearly wrecked by an unwilling- ness on the part of those respon- sible to realise that in peace time a Volunteer, in the very nature of things, has commitments trans- cending the Military duty which he has voluntarily undertaken in order to make himself of use in a crisis.

LIASON

There will also be lovely girls mounted on gally caparisoned ponies, representing warlike events in China's history, and also hu- morous "groups of clowns and actors dressed up in grotesque costumes.

"NIGHT PROCESSION, The night procession will consist of numerous species of illuminated Bre-like Ash of considerable ar tistic merit and other denizens of the deep. besides beautifully - minated lanterns of fruits and flower designs.

But the chief attractions will be the illuminated historical tableaux and floats of gally dressed girls, and the monster gauze and golden dragons, and the unique and awe- inspiring monster centipede with its one hundred red and shimmer- ing feet.

CROWDS OF VISITORS

Over 100,000 passengers are ex pected to arrive In the Colony by the river boats and the Kowloon- Cantor: Railway during the Corona tion festivities.

Extra trains will be run between Canton and Hong Kong during Coronation week.
