Brilliant Sunshine Favours Race Meeting
MR. BILL POY RIDES TWO WINNERS
The record-breaking ron of Lancashire Chips (Mr. Donald Black), in the Canterbury Park Handicap, over six furlongs, was the feature of the Fourth Extra Race Meeting at Happy Valley on Saturday when brilliant sunshine lavoured the large number of turf enthusiasts who attended.
4
The most successful fockey of the day was Mr. W. Foy who rode two winners, Blandford and Laughing Buddha, which paid 590.30 and $64.90 respectively, while in The Hunchback's Plate, Tabby Cat, the favourite, ridden by Mr. Choy Wing-chiu fulSU- ed expectations. A protest was lodged against the winner in the race but it was not upheld by the Stewards.
The main item on the programme, St. George's Plate, at- tracted only three starters. Havoc Eve. Expansion Time and Potentate which finished in the order named. The cash sweeps were well supported, the first prize in each of the first eight races being well over the $1,000 mark while that in the last race of the day paid $3,886.20.
CHARTERS TOWERS HANDICAP,
Mr. W C." Foy rode a good race" on Blandford to win the opening race of the day and return the nandsome dividend of $90.70 to his backers.
When the gate went up Racing Heart (Mr. B. A. Proulx) and Honey (Mr. Ip Kut Ying) went out to the lead and they were about five lengths ahead of the rest of the field which were bunched to- gether.
When the Village Bend was reached Saucy Face (Mr. H. C. Plh) and Blandford (Mr. W. C. Poy)
moved up to the front but it was not till the Distance Post that Blandford overtook the leaders to win by two lengths with Racing Heart second and Saucy Face third.
MOUNT DAVIS HANDICAP Apilas (Mr. S. C. Liang; fulfilled' expectations when it finished Ørst in the Mount Davis Handicap, the second and third places being filled by Bistre (Mr. H. C. Pih) and Jungle Jim (Mr. Ip Kul Ying) respectively.
Apilas was left at the start but Mr. Liang showed rare judgment and, 'keeping his incunt well-placed throughout the race, he gave the animal its head at the Quarter- Mile Post and Aplias responded in grand style.
ST. GEORGE'S PLATE Only three pontes faced the starter for the St. George's Plate, Havoc Eve (Mr. Y. T. Fung) Ex- pansion Time (Mr. B. A. Proulx) and Potentate (Mr. W. C. Poy).
Contrary to expectations the Eye candidate was not made favourite. Expansion Time commanding the most followers. When the barrier went up Havoc Eve took the lead followed by Expansion Time and Potentate. The same order was maintained till the finish.
THE HUNCHBACK'S PLATE
Tabby Cat (Mr. Choy Wing Chiu) was made hot favourite for this race and it fulfiled expectations although winning by only a short head from National Anthem (Mr. R. M. Wood). Declasse (Mr., W. C. Foy) was third two lengths, be-
hind
It was a very open race and the result was in doubt till the very end and it was due to the fact that the favourite had just that little reserve left that it won.
HIGH WEST HANDICAP The High West Handicap saw the favourite, King's Justice (Mr. H. C. Plby finishing a comfortable winner with the other two places Alled by Rose Queen (Mr. B. A. Proulx) and Dawn Star (Mr. Ip Kui Ying)..
There was not very much in the race until the last 200 yards when the first three ponies fought out the issue between them, the favourite showing a good burst of speed to clinch the issue
scoring his second win of the day on Laughing Buddha, with its stable-mate, Laughing Girl (Mr. Tang Man Wa) second and Valor- ous (Mr. B. A. Proulx) third.
The field was bunched together for the greater part of the race and it was not till the last 200 yards that the leaders started to draw away from the rest of the field.
MOUNT DAVIS HANDICAP Centre Forward Mr. H. C. Pih) won the second section of the Mount Davis Handicap in
Arie
style to pay the handsome dividend of $71.90, the favourite, Commence ment Bay (Mr. D. Black) being unplaced. A closely fought out race ended with Centre Forward, Rose Evelyn (Mr. B. A. Proulx) and Gordito (Mr. S. C. Liang) finishing in the order named.
TAI-MO-SHAN HANDICAP Mr. B. A. Proulx rode a fine race on Araxy to win the last race of the day, the favourite, Emergency Call only running into third place. It was a short race and for the greater part of it the fteld was bunched together: ÜT entering the home stretch, however, Araxy ran away in grand style and finished five lengths to the good.
